Twilight Volleyball in Gulfport (FL)

30 Jan 2018

Volleyball courts are a common sight at many public beach locations in Florida. Beach volleyball is a popular sport played year round at courts both on and off the beach. The image below is a game I encountered on the public volleyball courts along the beach front in Gulfport (Florida), a small city adjacent to St Petersburg and part of the St Petersburg metropolitan area. This particular evening also featured an unusually bright full moon which had drawn me out to look for subjects to photograph. On this occasion other subjects besides the sunset itself were available to photograph at this time of day.

ST PETERSBURG (FL) PIER AT CHRISTMAS

21 Dec 2017

This is a view of the pier in downtown St Petersburg (Florida) I photographed at Christmas four years ago. It’s no longer possible to go on location to view the scene in this image as the inverted pyramid structure on the pier was closed and demolished since the picture was taken, this photo now a record of local history.

I added a second gallery of images featuring various locations in downtown St Petersburg during the current (2017) Christmas season. Select St Petersburg Downtown Christmas 2017 to view images in this gallery,

Holiday greetings to everyone and thank you for visiting my site.

NIGHT MOVES PHOTOGRAPHY ON 500px

1 Dec 2017

500px is a photography sharing site and on-line community geared toward “high-end amateur”, semi-professional and professional photographers. This site is definitely a place to showcase your best photography in a place where other photographers are also showcasing their best work. The overall quality of photography exhibited on 500px is well above that seen in other photo sharing sites. In addition to viewing showcased images, 500px allows you to like and post comments on any image as well as choosing to follow (in 500px) the photographer who submitted the image. The site also allows viewing a selection of images by subject as well as viewing all photographic work submitted in 500px by an individual photographer. 500px is also an on-line community of photographers and the site includes additional features available to paid subscribers. 500px is clearly a site created by photographers for photographers. 500px has a free trial subscription period available with a basic paid subscription currently at $50 per year.

I became a paid subscriber to 500px in the last few days and posted my first image (below) on 500px from my (Sunset at Pier 60 2017) gallery. Joining 500px provided me with two opportunities: getting my own photographic work out and showcasing it in a place where it is easily seen and reviewed by my “peers” in the world of photography, as well as having the opportunity (myself) to see and review photography submitted by my “peers”. I have found 500px an excellent place to see work other photographers are creating and the possibility of learning ideas from their work.

I became aware of 500px several years ago after viewing a tutorial video about 500px done by Serge Ramelli in 2014. The video is currently available on You Tube, Select this link (Serge Ramelli tutorial) to watch his video. Select this link (Spruce.com) for a review of the 500px website.

THE CLOCKS HAVE CHANGED!

11 Nov 2017

I’ve been attending a series of classroom meetings at the Bay Harbor Hotel near the Tampa airport for several weeks and watched the beginning of sunsets over Tampa Bay from the restaurant patio behind the hotel before the start of the meetings. Unfortunately I was unable to see a complete sunset as I had to go into the meeting room before the sunsets actually occurred. Then the time change happened and clocks were set back an hour, moving the sunset time an hour earlier and allowing the opportunity to see and photograph a complete sunset before the meeting started. Along with the earlier sunset, cooler and less humid weather in Florida makes night photography easy and comfortable. Sunset views of Tampa Bay like those shown in my gallery can be caught at several locations within a mile or so from the airport.

SUNSET BOULEVARD IN SAFETY HARBOR

6 Nov 2017

For many people, the idea of “clocks changing” during the fall season of the year means losing an hour of daylight as it gets dark earlier. In the world of night photography it’s an additional hour of night that’s otherwise unavailable during the rest of the year. This particular evening was my first opportunity this year to take advantage of the additional hour of darkness for night photography.

The image is a view of downtown Safety Harbor (Florida) looking directly up the length of Main Street from outside the main entrance of the Safety Harbor Spa and Resort. Taking this image involved a considerable amount of patience as there is a significant quantity of vehicle traffic moving through the intersection in the foreground of this picture plus the added consideration of the vehicles appearing in the picture being far enough away where their motion is not visible in the finished result (despite the fact they are moving toward and away from camera while the shutter is opened).

PHOTOSHOP WORLD 2017

26 Oct 2017

Six months ago I attended my first Photoshop World conference in Orlando (Florida). After being tempted for several years to go to Photoshop World but (in the end) not going due to travel and other considerations, the opportunity could not be passed up given Orlando is only a 90-minute drive from my home. I packed up and headed to Orlando to attend the entire three days of the conference. The experience for me was definitely worthwhile and I would do it again.

The Photoshop World conference runs three days (excluding one day of pre-conference activities) and has classroom sessions on many general photography subjects as well as using Photoshop and Lightroom. Photoshop World also includes a number of evening events for attendees and other activities. I got to hang out with many fellow photographers attending the conference and had the opportunity to meet a few instructors in person who I followed or watched on-line over the last several years.

I’m including the link Photoshop World 2017 Highlights which will direct you to Scott Kelby’s website that contains a review of the conference and many pictures.

Select Photoshop World 2017 to view the gallery containing the image shown below and a selection of “random” images I took while going around the conference.
